morris county

David Kristian is composing the multifaceted score to the upcoming Morris County, an equal parts drama, horror, true-crime anthology and life-cycle piece following three sets of characters on their individual journeys into oblivion. Morris County is written and directed by Matthew Garrett and produced by Thomas R. Rondinella (Unholy, Charming Billy); the film stars Pamela Stewart (A Dog Year, 100 Proof, Amateur), Albie Selznick (TV's 24, Suddenly Susan) and newcomers Alice Cannon and Darcy Miller.

walled in

David is also scoring Gilles Paquet-Brenner's Walled In, starring Mischa Barton (The O.C., Assassination of a High School President, Malice in Sunderland), Cameron Bright (X-Men: The Last Stand, the 4400, Running Scared), and Deborah Kara Unger (Silent Hill, Crash, Shake Hands with the Devil).  The film is based on the novel "Les Emmurés" by French writer Serge Brussolo.  The film's website, which features a few snippets of David's music is now up and also includes more info and behind the scenes photos.

Sisters

sisters

David joined forces with Emmy Award winning composer Ed Dzubak to score Douglas Buck's Sisters, which stars Lou Doillon (the new face of Chanel), Chloë Sevigny (Boys Don’t Cry, Big Love, Zodiac), and Stephen Rea (The Crying Game, V for Vendetta).  Sisters is produced by Edward R. Pressman (The Cooler, American Psycho, Bad Lieutenant), who also produced the 1973 Brian DePalma original.  Some of you may remember David and Ed's previous collaboration on Douglas' Buck's Prologue, which appears on Family Portraits: A Trilogy of America.   Read a review of Sisters by Variety's John Anderson.

applied-acoustics interview

String Studio VS1 fanatic David Kristian discusses the particularities of Horror film scoring, the peaceful coexistence of analog and software synthesizers in his electronic music setup, and the art of creating live soundtracks with delay loopers, in the latest installment of Head2Head on the Applied-Acoustics Systems website.

catman

David Kristian recently completed work on six episodes of Ryosuke Aoike's Catman for Fuji TV.  David's sound effects and 70's crime film influenced music cues help flesh out  the now longer installments of the cult web animation series which features music from unstoppable Ska group The Planet Smashers.

pithecanth

It's 7am in Tokyo, and lowbrow, or should we say prominent brow humor is the order of the day, as Ryosuke Aoike and David Kristian team-up once again to warp young minds with Pithecanth, a Tokyo TV series about the Java Man, believed to be the the first known specimen of Homo erectus.  Pithecanth is ripe with flatulent monkeyshines, prehistoric highjinks, and classic cartoon humor.  The 13 episode series not only features music and sound design by David Kristian, but he is also part of the voice cast, playing the part of "Sinister", the eldest of the prehistoric clan.

la belle bete

David Kristian served as composer and special sound designer for Karim Hussain's La Belle Bȇte, (The Beautiful Beast) which stars Caroline Dhavernas (Hollywoodland, Breach, Wonderfalls), Marc-André Grondin (C.R.A.Z.Y.), Carole Laure (Les Fils de Marie, Maria Chapdelaine) and David La Haye (Nouvelle France, Marie Antoinette). The film is based on a classic Quebec novel by author Marie-Claire Blais (Éditions Boréal), and tells the story of a widowed mother and the twisted, dysfunctional relationship she has with her two teenaged children.  The DVD  is now available to purchase or rental from Equinoxe Films/Warner Home Video.  La Belle Bȇte recently received the Director's Choice Best Feature award at the Boston Underground Film Festival.  Read a recent review of the film on the Dread Central site.

Fans of Karim Hussain's unique cinematic vision will also be glad to hear about the new 6 DVD boxed set available from Stockholm based Njutafilm, one of the leading Scandinavian distribution companies dealing in alternative, cult, experimental and classic feature films and documentaries for the Nordic and European market.  The Karim Hussain Boxed Set includes many never before seen or heard extras such as deleted scenes from Subconscious Cruelty,  Making-of featurettes,  and David Kristian's soundtrack to Ascension, complete with unreleased cues.

Karel Roden in The Abandoned

the abandoned

Over 70 minutes of David Kristian's unsettling music and soundscapes are  featured along with the work of legendary sound designers Glenn Freemantle and Andy Wilkinson (28 Days Later, V for Vendetta), and composer Alfons Conde (who wrote the opening titles music) in Nacho Cerdà's long awaited The Abandoned. The film stars Anastasia Hille (The Hole, RKO 281) and Karel Roden (Hellboy, Running Scared, The Bourne Supremacy), and was written by Nacho Cerdà, Karim Hussain (La Belle Bȇte, Ascension) and Richard Stanley (Hardware, Dust Devil).

The Abandoned had its World premiere screening at the Toronto International Film Festival as part of the fest's Midnight Madness program, and  was also voted audience favorite during the 8 Films to Die For After Dark Horrorfest in November 2006.  The film opened in theaters across North-America on February 23, 2007.   Read interviews with Nacho Cerda and Karim Hussain in issue #259 of Fangoria and issue #67 of Rue Morgue, which tells the whole story as to why David was called in at the 11th hour to replace most the film's score.

the 4th life

David also created music and soundscapes for filmmaker Francois Miron's The 4th Life.  The film stars Janet Lane (Lucky Number Slevin, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind) and Andrea Sheldon (Gothika).  The 4th Life was recently screened at the Ravenna Nightmare Film Festival in Italy, and was also shown at the Boston Underground Film Festival (March 22-27 2007).  The 4th Life had its Canadian premiere on July 19th, 2007 at the FanTasia Festival in Montreal.

the descendant

David has been making a name for himself as the composer of choice for all things ghostly, as his music can also be heard (and felt) in Philippe Spurrell's The Descendant. The film's preview screening at the 2006 edition of the FanTasia Film Festival was deemed a triumph for the up-and-coming Montreal Director, who was even treated to a standing ovation from an enthusiastic sold-out crowd.  While the first cut of the film has been making the festival rounds, a new version with, among other things, the film's final sound edit, will soon be available for theatrical screenings.

american psyche

David has just finished scoring Paul van den Boom's American Psyche, a documentary examining the current social mindset in the United States through a series of interviews with Americans of diverse race, gender, religion, and socio-economic standing.  David also scored the film's trailer and created the music for the Boom Pictures Logo.  American Psyche should be available on DVD in the coming weeks.
